Quick answer
Canadian Immigration Experts, a Toronto firm established in 1995, serves Ajax and Pickering remotely from our North York office. Our focus for these communities is family and spousal sponsorship — reuniting partners, children, parents and grandparents — including refusals and Immigration Appeal Division appeals, with free IRB interpreters for hearings.
Do you have an office in Ajax or Pickering?
No. Our office is in North York at 1110 Finch Ave W #406, and we act for families across Ajax, Pickering and Durham Region entirely by phone, email and secure videoconference. That works well for the many commuter households here who take the Pickering or Ajax GO train into the city — a sponsorship file rarely needs an in-person meeting, and everything can be handled around your schedule. We have advised on Canadian immigration since 1995.
Why is family sponsorship the main need in Ajax and Pickering?
Ajax and Pickering are among the most diverse communities in the eastern GTA, with large South Asian and Caribbean populations and many families reuniting across borders. That makes spousal sponsorship in Canada and broader family sponsorship the work we do most for the area. A sponsor must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, at least 18, and give a three-year undertaking. There is no minimum-income requirement to sponsor a spouse or partner — that requirement applies to parents and grandparents, not spouses.
Inland or outland — which spousal route is right?
The choice matters most when a refusal is possible. Inland sponsorship applies when your partner is already in Canada and can bring an open work permit while you wait, but an inland refusal cannot be appealed to the Immigration Appeal Division — your only route is judicial review. Outland sponsorship is processed while your partner is abroad, and an outland refusal carries a full IAD appeal heard fresh. For couples in Ajax and Pickering weighing this, the deciding factors are usually your partner’s status, work needs and the strength of the file.
| Feature | Inland | Outland |
|---|---|---|
| Where the partner is | Already in Canada with you | Abroad (or can be) |
| Open work permit | Often available while waiting | Not through this stream |
| Appeal right on refusal | No IAD appeal — judicial review only | Full IAD appeal, 30 days to file |
| Travel during processing | Leaving Canada can risk the application | Travel is generally fine |
| Genuineness test | Section 4 IRPR — is the relationship genuine, or entered primarily for status? | |
What happens if a sponsorship is refused?
A refusal is not the end of the road. Most spousal refusals turn on genuineness under section 4 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations — IRCC decides the relationship is not genuine, or was entered primarily to gain status. Understanding the exact spousal sponsorship refusal reasons in your letter is the starting point. For an outland refusal you have 30 days to bring a spousal sponsorship refusal appeal to the Immigration Appeal Division, which rehears the case de novo and can accept new evidence. Our Immigration Appeal Division appeals practice prepares you and your witnesses for that hearing. You can read the tribunal’s own material at the Immigration and Refugee Board.
Will language be a barrier at an IRB hearing?
No. The Immigration and Refugee Board provides a qualified interpreter free of charge for IAD hearings, and you can request your language and dialect in advance — useful for the Tamil-, Urdu-, Punjabi-, Gujarati- and Caribbean-Creole-speaking families we serve in Ajax and Pickering. You testify in the language you are most comfortable in, and we prepare your evidence so it lands clearly through interpretation. Getting the documents, timeline and testimony to tell one consistent story matters more than the language they are told in.
Sponsoring parents, grandparents and children
Beyond partners, families in Ajax and Pickering often want to reunite across generations. Parents and grandparents can come through the Parents and Grandparents Program when intake opens, or visit long-term on a Super Visa — a 10-year multiple-entry visa allowing stays of up to 5 years per entry, subject to a minimum-income undertaking and at least one year of qualifying medical insurance with minimum coverage of $100,000. Dependent children can be included with a spouse or sponsored on their own. If a stalled file needs court intervention, a writ of mandamus in Canada can compel IRCC to decide — it does not force approval.

Frequently asked questions
Do you have an office in Ajax or Pickering?
No. We are based in North York at 1110 Finch Ave W #406, Toronto, and we serve Ajax, Pickering and the rest of Durham Region remotely by phone, email and secure videoconference. Nothing about a sponsorship file requires you to attend our office in person.
My spouse and I speak Tamil, Urdu or Punjabi — will that be a problem at a hearing?
No. If a sponsorship refusal goes to the Immigration Appeal Division, the IRB provides a qualified interpreter at no cost to you, and you can request your language and dialect in advance. We prepare you and your witnesses so the evidence comes across clearly regardless of the language you testify in.
What is the difference between inland and outland spousal sponsorship?
Inland applies when your partner is already in Canada with you and may allow an open work permit, but an inland refusal has no appeal to the IAD — only judicial review. Outland is processed while your partner is abroad, and an outland refusal carries a full IAD appeal. The right choice depends on your partner’s status and travel needs.
Our spousal application was refused as ‘not genuine’. Can we appeal?
If it was an outland application, yes — you have 30 days to file an appeal to the Immigration Appeal Division, which hears the case fresh (de novo) and can consider new evidence. Refusals under section 4 of the Regulations turn on whether the relationship is genuine or was entered primarily for status.
Can I sponsor my parents or grandparents to Ajax or Pickering?
Possibly, through the Parents and Grandparents Program when it opens, or a Super Visa for longer visits. A Super Visa is a 10-year multiple-entry visa allowing stays of up to 5 years per entry, with a minimum-income undertaking and at least one year of qualifying medical insurance.
How long does spousal sponsorship take, and what if it stalls?
Processing times change, so check current IRCC processing times rather than relying on an old figure. If IRCC holds your file well past the normal time and follow-ups go unanswered, a writ of mandamus can ask the Federal Court to compel a decision — it forces IRCC to decide, not to approve.
